The word "free" gets stretched significantly in this market. Here are the six criteria we use to determine whether a CV builder is genuinely free — not just free to start:
You should be able to use the tool without creating an account. Most builders require email and password before you can see a single template.
The download step is where most builders collect. A subscription page appearing after you've spent 20 minutes building your CV is a dark pattern.
Some tools put "Made with [Brand]" on free downloads. A watermark on a CV is unprofessional and likely to harm your application.
