How do I compress a PDF to under 500 KB?

Open Compress PDF, choose Target size, select 500 KB and add your file. The tool tries Light compression first (images are made smaller, text stays selectable). If that is not enough, it turns pages into images at the highest quality that still fits.

What if it cannot reach 500 KB?

Then it says so plainly and offers the smallest version it could make. Very long scans or image-heavy files sometimes cannot get that small without becoming unreadable — remove pages you do not need, or upload the document in parts if the portal allows it.

Will the text stay selectable?

If Light compression reaches the target, yes. If the pages have to become images, the summary tells you that the text is no longer selectable — important for CVs that an applicant tracking system reads. For CVs, a 200 KB target is a common job-portal limit.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Compression runs in your browser and the file stays on your device. Large files work too — up to 1 GB for Target size on desktop Chrome or Edge, 500 MB in other browsers.

What usually makes a PDF too big?

Almost always images: phone photos of documents, scans saved at high resolution, or pictures pasted into a Word file before it was saved as PDF. Text takes very little space. That is why Light compression — which shrinks only the images — is often enough for a 500 KB limit while keeping the text selectable.

Compress a PDF to 500 KB in three steps

  1. Open Compress PDF. Go to Compress PDF and choose Target size.
  2. Pick 500 KB. Select 500 KB (or type a custom size).
  3. Add your PDF. The result is made on your device; download it when it is ready.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Yes — free, with no signup and no watermark.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The PDF is compressed in your browser.

Can I choose a different size?

Yes — 100 KB, 200 KB, 1 MB, 2 MB or any custom size.

Why is my compressed PDF blurry?

To reach a small target, pages may become images at a lower resolution. Try a larger target or remove pages you do not need.
