How do I turn a PDF into flashcards for free?

Click Upload File, choose the PDF, pick a size and make the pack. The text of the PDF is read in your browser, page by page; only the trimmed text is sent to the AI, never the file itself.

It works the same way for Word documents, PowerPoint slides and plain .txt files — useful when your lecturer shares slides rather than notes.

Which PDFs work best?

PDFs with real, selectable text work straight away: lecture notes, textbook chapters, articles, handouts and slide decks saved as PDF. If you can highlight the words in a PDF reader, ParaFree can read them.

A scanned PDF is a set of pictures with no text inside. Convert it with PDF to Word, which reads scanned pages with OCR (English), then upload the Word file. Very long files are fine too: the text is cut down to its most central sentences before anything is sent.

How big can the file be?

On desktop Chrome or Edge, documents can be up to 2 GB; in other browsers (Firefox, Safari, phones) up to 500 MB. Large files are read in slices, so the browser never has to hold the whole file at once. Word and PowerPoint files are zip archives — only their text parts are read, never the images or videos inside.

Pick a size before you start. Quick gives a short set of key points, a few cards and a five-question quiz. Standard suits a lecture or a chapter: about ten key points, a dozen flashcards and an eight-question quiz. Exam prep makes the most — about fifteen flashcards and twelve quiz questions — for revising a whole topic.

Does my PDF get uploaded?

Files are read in your browser, and long texts are cut down to their most central sentences (TextRank) before anything is sent, so the AI gets at most about 4,000 words. That text goes to an AI provider to write your pack and is not saved by ParaFree. The AI is told to use only what is in your material, but it can still make mistakes — check anything important against your notes or textbook.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make flashcards from lecture slides?

Yes. Upload the PowerPoint (.pptx) file, or the slides saved as a PDF. The text on each slide is read.

Why does it say my PDF has no readable text?

It is probably a scan. Use PDF to Word with OCR, then upload the Word file.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read in your browser; only the extracted, trimmed text is sent to the AI to write the pack.

Can I use a very large PDF?

Yes — up to 2 GB on desktop Chrome or Edge and 500 MB in other browsers.

Is it free?

Yes, free with no signup.
